How to Build a Catio

This post is for all you DYIers and/or those who know someone with carpentry skills 😉 I discovered an excellent post explaining how to build a catio at I’ve also seen cat owners who created an exterior ‘cat house’ by enclosing a porch, so there are many ways to create a catio. Catladyconfidential says, “A catio space can be as big, or small as your space will allow and your cat will thank you either way. It can be elaborate as you would like with tunnels and hiding spaces, or it can be as simple as a box perched outside a window or even a screen-in balcony.” That is a mere hint at the excellent advice you will find there. If you are considering this sort of project, I suggest you read the article before you start making plans, because they even have a section of things to consider before building a catio.

  1. Douglas and Sharon Brown of Vancouver built a catio that has features similar to the one in the photo but also includes catwalks into a tree and around the second story of their home. The five family cats can go in or come out at will since there is a cat door on the second story for their convenience. There also is a screened in patio for the kitties to use for bird watching. You can see these home features from time to time in videos the Browns post on Facebook and You Tube.
