Why Cats Need Claws

HugYourCat4

We do not declaw, but we have used glue on claw caps to protect furniture while the cat is learning to limit clawing to tree trunks (We also have a chunk of tree trunk inside, which we use as a clawing post, so our cats don’t get confused. I hope you find this info-graphic about why cats need their claws useful.

  1. I declawed two cats when I was in my 20s – before I understood what declawing was. Since then I have never declawed again and actively speak out against it. I have adopted declawed cats, but it is something I don’t do – despite the scars I carry!!!

    1. I’ve got a few scars, too, but I would never trade them for the alternative. IMHO, if humans realized exactly what the surgery involved, I don’t think many would – even fewer would if they had the equivalent surgery that they wanted to do to their pet.

    1. The main claw issues we have come from Saphera … dogs can not retract their claws, yet I’ve never heard of anyone suggesting that a dog needed to be declawed.

  2. Declawing should be illegal everywhere. I cat sit for 2 cats that had tendon cuts so they wouldn’t scratch ( their previous owner had it done), I think this is just as bad.
